Drogba and Bakay linked up at Phoenix Rising during the 2017/18 season and they have been friends since then. Phoenix Rising play their club football in the second tier in the United States.

Ivorian football legend Didier Drogbahas bought a stake at the US second tier club as he transforms from a professional footballer to an investor.

Didier Drogba had spent two separate spells at Chelsea before he joined Phoenix Rising in 2017. He won the Champions League title with Chelsea at the end of his first spell at the club in addition to winning four Premier League titles.

Drogba was the main man in the 2012 Champions League final as the Ivorian football icon scored the lone goal for the Blues and also scored the winning penalty in the shootout. He was a thorn in the flesh of German Bundesliga outfit Bayern Munich in that final.

Thomas Mueller gave Bayern the lead late in the game but Drogba was able to rescue Chelsea from the jaws of death with a bullet header just before full-time. His equaliser led to extra time and penalties when the two teams remained level. Chelsea went on to win the Champions League title for the first timevia penalties with Didier Drogba netting the winning penalty as pointed out earlier.

Drogba left Chelsea at the end of his contract shortly after that 2012 Champions League final before returning two years later. He had been at Turkish club Galatasaray. Drogba returned to Chelsea on a one-year deal and he reunited with Jose Mourinho to win the 2014/15 Premier League title. Two of his first three Premier League titles was under Mourinho.
